MASTERY MODEL LESSON PLAN
GRADE: 2ND
LESSON LENGTH: 30 minutes
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

PREPARATION:
Discuss concept of alliteration and what letters work for individual students first name
MANAGEMENT STANDARDS:
Class rules apply
Group work rules apply
Voice 2 (little louder than a whisper)

ANTICIPATORY SET:
PHASE ONE:Objectives are stated clearly at the beginning
Behavioral Objective (Do):
Students work together to write alliteration poem
Students will brainstorm words that have same first letter as their name
Students will finish name alliteration poem consisting of at least 4 alliteration words (EX: Annie ate an apple and apricot.)
Students will understand where punctuation goes in poem
All words spelled correctly in poem
Students will behave quietly and as scholar students
Transfer (Learning theory/citations):
Students will be able to recognize alliterations, correct punctuation, and understand how to make more alliteration poems
Motivation (Teacher created):
Class table points may be rewarded to students who are working well together and on task
Student’s may get stickers for good behavior
Class receives 2 Legos at end of lesson if they stayed on task for entire lesson
METHODOLOGY:
PHASE TWO: Sequence of tasks is provided with information about how to complete tasks successfully
Teacher gives students pre-test telling them to write an alliteration poem before explain alliteration concept
Teacher will explain alliteration, give example using personal name and show where correct punctuation goes in poem and correct spelling
Class will brainstorm together and come up with adjectives and words for all letters of the alphabet (spelled correctly) to create alliteration word wall
Students will get in pairs and brainstorm words that begin with the first letter in their first name, using a variety of sources including word banks, dictionaries, alliteration word wall and discussing with their partner
Students will walk around and get other word suggestions from other students
Student will then write alliteration name poem to be turned in for post test
Pair of students creates two alliteration poems together.
They will swap with another pair of students and revise each other’s poems, correct for punctuation and spelling as needed, for meaning and conventions.
Students will share their poems in front of class.

Teacher will demonstrate examples on the board with own name
Will explain alliterations and proper punctuation on board
Will make alliteration word wall with students
GUIDED PRACTICE (Checking for understanding – group) LEARNING TASKS (Activities):
Teacher and teacher’s aide will walk around room to assist students in writing poems and monitor students when they walk around room
Students will work together to help correct punctuation, spelling, etc.
Students will come up to the board and read the poems

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (Monitor/adjust – individual) PRODUCTIVE MODALITIES:
Independent alliteration poem will be assigned for homework assignment
CLOSURE:
Students will have option to present poems to the class
Teacher will ask students what they learned and collect poem- Post Test
Make sure students understand concepts
Assign homework assignment
