SUBJECT: SOCIAL STUDIES Objectives: Students will define the reasons why a society has a division of labor after reading text and observing pictures. They will report their understandings in a mini-report. Model of Teaching: Group Investigation PHASE One: Present the Puzzlement T - (Present this collection of picture and ask students to observe the pictures.) T - Look at these pictures. What questions do you have about people and the work they do? PHASE Two: Students explore reactions to the situation. Solicit Student Questions T - (Write student questions on a chart.) T - What questions do you have? I'll write them on the chart. S - How do people decide the work they will do? S - Why do we need so many different workers? S - Do all the workers get paid the same? T - (Complete the chart) Phase Three - Students formulate study task and organize for study (problem definition, role, assignments, etc.). Research T - I'm going to divide you into Study Groups. Look for your name on the Study Group list. Each group will use the materials in the shopping bag assigned to their Study Group to answer the questions. What patterns of behavior will be necessary in order to work in your Study Group to complete your task? S - Review the questions. S - Respect each others time and effort. S - Share the materials. S - Write down answers to the questions. T - Your responses indicate how well you remember the "research rules". Check the clock. Remember to name a Time Keeper in your group so you can be productive. It's 10:30; at 11:00 we will share our answers to the questions. What will you do if you need assistance? S - Ask each other first and then ask yourself. Phase Four - Independent and group study. Share the Information T - (Teacher writes responses on a retrieval chart) Study Group 1, what do you find out about why we need so many workers? S - We found out that people do different work. They specialize. T - How did your group define "specialize"? S - It means people do certain things because they have certain skills. T - Study Group 2, what would you add-to group 1's comments? S - Specialization also means divisions of labor. S - Yes, it means certain people do certain work to get a job done. T - What did you find out about how people get paid for their work? What summary statements can you make about why people do certain jobs for particular pay? S - We need many workers to produce or make something. S - People have special skills to do certain kinds of work. S -Yes, and people get paid according to their skills - most of the time. T - Provide us with an example that supports our summary statements. S - Making toys - some people design them, some put them together, some sell them. S - And some play with them.
